Writing is a Journey

In my opinion, the summer semester has always been my favorite time of year to attend Ensign College. The class sizes are smaller, and I feel like I have been able to get more personalized instruction from my teachers. When I signed up for my Writing for Communication Careers class, I was not sure what to expect. 

I have always appreciated a good story and have felt like I have sometimes been able to express myself more successfully through writing than I have through my speaking. That being said, it’s always been difficult for me to write about topics that I am not interested in. At first thought, writing in a professional setting never really seemed like something that interested me. Sure, all jobs require at least a bit of writing but I guess I never really pictured my future profession to be writing heavy. 

I came into the class with goals not only to improve my writing as a whole but also to find enjoyment in more professional-styled writing. I love the way my personality and voice shine through my writing, and I want to be able to write in a way that sounds both professional and authentic to me. In class, we’ve discussed techniques to properly use AI tools to help us improve our writing. Rather than viewing AI as a means to limit creativity, we have learned to use AI tools to help during the brainstorming and editing stages of writing. Weekly grammar reviews and quizzes have helped me become a more professional-sounding writer while still maintaining the style that makes me sound like me. 

I value creativity. One of the things that attracted me to digital marketing and advertising is the opportunity to create unique content that audiences will remember. This semester, I have learned how a good story and writing can make all of the difference. When writing is combined with a visual format that matches its style, this can leave a lasting effect on readers. A well-written call to action can help push consumers down the path of conversion.

The assignments in this class have helped me to stretch and reach the goals I entered the class with. Each week, I have an opportunity to write three blog articles that I am proud of. We have also been given time to create scripts and create short videos. In today’s marketing world, video content is key. Video creation is a must-have skill for any marketer hoping to land a position at a marketing or advertising firm. Thanks to this class I can confidently say I have gained new skill that will help me excel when I enter the workforce. 

I don’t think I have ever written as much as I have these past two months. Thanks to lots of repetition and learning from instructive feedback, I have slowly started to see myself improve as a writer. I am more confident in my abilities and feel like I can write about anything. I have a better understanding of how writing and my future profession go hand in hand.
